How long do sump pumps last?

Most sump pumps last 7–10 years with moderate use. In areas with high water tables or frequent cycling, 5–7 years is more typical. Replace proactively rather than waiting for failure.

Do I need a backup sump pump?

A battery backup is strongly recommended. Most basement flooding events happen during storms — exactly when power outages also occur, disabling your primary pump. A backup provides critical protection.

Where should sump pump water discharge?

Discharge should be piped at least 10 feet from the foundation, ideally to a dry well, drainage ditch, or storm drain. Discharging too close to the house just recirculates the same water back into the pit.

My sump pump is running constantly — is that normal?

Continuous running indicates either a very high water table (may be normal in spring), a stuck float switch, a failed check valve allowing water to drain back in, or an undersized pump.
